TY
This is the first post in Case Studies, a new category on logolog. Enjoy.
Ty Wilkins Self Promotion Project.
Ty studied Graphic Design undergrad at Auburn University. He first worked on this assignment in a Graphic Design II class. However, he came up with the current logo after graduation, but this assignment was what first made him think about designing a self identity. Download the PDF of the project description.

“The logo is composed of the letters of my name “T & Y” and is a smiling face.”
Sketches and Roughs
ByTy : Initially conceived as a signature for illustrations, this is a play on rhyming words.
TYW : My last name is Wilkins, so I created a gestalt where the T, Y & W interlock.

Cubes : A section of a chain of transparent cubes are filled in to spell TY.
Keyboard : I took advantage of the fact that the T and Y are next to each other on a keyboard.

3D : Tracing the contours of two boxes spells TY.
Figures : Two characters, one with open arms and another with raised arms, spell TY

Pi : The pi symbol can also look like TY
TV : A play on the familiar tv icon.

Style : Before Ty Pennington rolled out his Style brand, I presented this to my Graphic Design II class.
TY”R”US : My full first name is Tyrus. This is an homage to the American toy store, Toys”R”Us.
I heart TY : An homage to Milton Glaser’s infamous icon. Though too self indulgent to use.
X+Y=Z : The +Y spells TY.

Arrows : The negative space between T and Y fits an arrow nicely.

Similar Concepts
Ty came up with his logo concepts back in 2002. After that, other designers came up with similar ideas.
Tiger Woods uses a logo similar to one TW (Ty Wilkins) logo concept and the American home improvement celebrity Ty Pennington uses a “style” logo similar to TY “style” logo.
